There was a time when doctors could not view the inner workings of the human body without performing invasive surgery. In early history, the only way for anatomists to study the human body and perform dissection was by robbing graves. Viewing the body’s organs, muscles, and bones in realistic detail without undertaking significant risk was unthinkable.
Access to cadavers for medical research improved over time, but it was only thirty years ago that Primal Pictures launched the first medically accurate digital 3D rendering of the human body based on extensive real-body scans and imaging data.
It was a game-changer that advanced medical science and catapulted our understanding of human anatomy. Since then, Primal Pictures’ work has expanded to all facets of health science and today is just as useful in nursing, dentistry, physical and occupational therapy, rehabilitation, and sports medicine as it was in general medicine.
This powerful imaging technology has revolutionized the way health care professionals and students are instructed. The application of the technology is endless. The impact on patient outcomes is immeasurable and will only continue to grow.
Learning Curve is the sole agent for Primal Pictures
Seizing on the possibility of a partnership with such a leader in its field, Learning Curve, a South African-based digital software company represents Primal Pictures in Sub-Saharan Africa and is expanding into other regions as a sole agent.
Learning Curve already had a peerless record with premium software brands and in unleashing a wave of digitally enabled tools through beneficial vendor relationships and strong negotiation for the community. Since its inception some fifteen years ago, it has been Learning Curve’s enduring aim to unleash the potential of the African continent using digital literacy as its vehicle.
Partnering with Primal Pictures was a natural fit. Learning Curve was already a leader in bridging the digital literacy gap by providing software training material. The company is well-known in the local market for its specialist product support which is targeted at facilitating the holistic digitalization of organisations they serve.
New ways of teaching for enhanced learning
Learning Curve deploys a team of qualified anatomists who help provide new ways of teaching of learning. Teaching has been ramped up from a static exercise that involved reading 2D diagrams off textbook pages into an immersive and unforgettable experience.
Primal Pictures’ highly detailed, three-dimensional images of the body enhance learning, make lessons memorable, and result in powerful outcomes for learners not only to pass their courses but to be better practitioners in their respective fields.
Through Learning Curve, Primal Pictures supports the journey from student to qualified medical practitioner across all health sciences. Although Learning Curve predominantly works with educational institutions, its materials can easily be used by clinicians and commercial entities too.
The power of Primal Pictures
For more than three decades, Primal Pictures’ ground-breaking and award-winning software has been used by millions of educators, students, and practitioners in over 1,500 institutions across more than 150 countries.
The 3D models can be used on any device, anywhere, anytime. The hyper-realistic visualizations have powerful effects on student motivation and engagement. Its wide variety of content such as guided learning and advanced 3D models amplifies learning and revolutionizes outcomes. Students will relish the learning experience with adaptive learning modules and assessment platforms. Advanced technology such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and mobile apps are also available for offline use.
When taught from 2D images in textbooks, the study and spatial appreciation of anatomy can be difficult. However, with revolutionary 3D evidence-based content, usage and engagement is heightened and course materials, lectures, and online learning is enlivened. Educators can seamlessly embed dynamic 3D models and content into their proprietary environment for augmented and unforgettable learning. What was once a laboured teaching process becomes dynamic and diversified.

Recently, Learning Curve partnered with the Stellenbosch University Anatomy Society (SUAS) to host a student workshop. Commenting on the existing learning environment, Chairperson of SUAS and MSc Anatomy candidate, Johara Khan said, “In the biomedical sciences, anatomy is a subject that is dreaded by many. Not only is the sight and interaction with a cadaver and heavy content load a daunting task, but students fail to see the relevance.”
The workshop, entitled ‘Augmented Reality and Ultrasound’, gave a futuristic anatomy experience. Using Primal Pictures’ powerful content, the workshop presented students with different ways to engage with the study of anatomy.
There were interesting activities, such as giving students the ability to test ultrasonography on their own bodies which helped students understand the human body in new and engaging ways.
One highlight of the session was when anatomists from Learning Curve showed the students how to perform a 3D virtual dissection. Students were trained on using Primal’s 3D Real-Time to carry out a virtual dissection, create custom 3D models, and use 3D models to help interpret cadaveric anatomy.
Speaking on the success of the workshop, Johara Khan noted, “Primal Pictures offers a unique platform that integrates the theory and practical visualization of anatomy beautifully. Not only does it offer students the “perfect specimen” to study anatomy, but it allows students to visualize the structures without the time constraints of the practical sessions.”
Why Learning Curve
Learning Curve goes to great lengths to keep its community engaged, with its anatomists providing continued training via monthly webinars, dynamic social media activities, curriculum mapping and exam preparations, which has empowered and motivated students and lecturers.
To stay abreast of developments, Learning Curve staff attend various events and conferences to keep up to date with education trends. Its team members contribute to industry conferences, such as the XXVIII International Symposium on Morphological Sciences hosted by the Anatomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA). In the most recent edition of the symposium, Learning Curve partnered with conference organizers as a sponsor and workshop provider
Primal Pictures and Learning Curve make the perfect partnership, each bringing immense industry experience, continued learning, and hard-won expertise to create a vital and leading-edge digital learning product.
